Ubon Ratchathani revs up its motor this month with a host of activities organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) that showcase this Northeastern town’s traditions and rituals under the Thailand Grand Festival theme of “timeless elegance”. July is the month of Khao Phansa or Buddhist Lent and the Ubon Ratchathani celebrations are popular with tourists and locals alike. Week two is devoted to Buddhist ceremonies and the third to the time-honoured beeswax carving contest (dates unconfirmed but set for July 20-24). The months wraps up with a succession of candle processions on July 25. And to make sure that visitors don’t miss out on the scenery in the area, the TAT and the provincial authorities are offering a special “Around Ubon” tour programme. Visitors to Phuket will soon be able explore the spectacular coral reefs by submarine – a first for Southeast Asia. The vessel will cruise between two islands, Koh Dok Mai and Koh Mai Ton, which lie a few hundred metres apart off Phuket’s southeast coast. The operators claim that the submarine will have no adverse impact on the environment due to its hi-tech construction and the project has been approved by the Harbour Department and the Royal Thai Navy in Phuket. The trips will take 45 minutes and cost Bt2,400 per person.
